RESULTS

Our faculty offers an excellent provision from teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about PE, Sport and Dance. Our mission is to support every student to enable them to achieve the best they can. In August 2019, 100% of our BTEC Sport Students in KS4 achieved a Distinction* – Merit, with 42% achieving Distinction/ Distinction*.  In addition, 100% of our BTEC Performing Arts (Dance) students achieved Distinction* – Merit, with 75% achieving Distinction/ Distinction*.  100% of students in KS5 Sport and Public Services courses achieved a Distinction*/ Distinction and the KS5 BTEC results put us in the top 10% of the country. We pride ourselves in offering the highest quality PE, Sport and Dance provision and ensure that students are well supported to achieve their potential.

WHY TAKE PE?

At Camborne Science and International Academy, we aim to realise every student’s potential with a commitment to participation and performance. The faculty of PE, Sport & Dance has a commitment to both curricular and co-curricular activities that will help motivate, stretch and provide students with opportunities to raise their own self-esteem and contribute to raising the profile of CSIA within the wider community. Physical Education, Sport and Dance have a unique contribution to make the overall development of the students in terms of personal, social, emotional and physical attributes. Students experience a Physical Education and Dance Curriculum which continually stresses the true value of sporting involvement and physical activity.

  • In developing positive attitudes, encouraging a sense of responsibility to oneself and others as individuals, whilst generating a sense of fairness, honest involvement and good behaviour, as well as working as part of a team.
  • In ensuring safe participation, recognising and following relevant rules, laws, codes, etiquette and safety procedures for different activities.
  • In promoting health and positive lifestyles through artistic expression and physical activity, this being of importance at all levels of ability.

KEY STAGE 3

Core PE is compulsory for all students. The lessons provided are two, one hundred minute lessons of PE per fortnight. Throughout the year, the pupils will study units of work; that include a range of different sports and activities; that develop broad and balanced foundation skills from which high performance can be built upon. These sports and activities include Invasion Games, Striking & Fielding Activities, Net and Wall Games, Outdoor Adventures, Problem Solving, Fitness and Athletics. They provide a medium through which students develop interpersonal skills that prepare them for healthy and successful lives. Wherever possible, direct links to the community are formed. There are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of PE. Pupils need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

In addition to Core PE, Performing Arts is offered as a one hundred minute lesson per fortnight.  Students study four units of work throughout each year group that include both Dance and Drama content. Each of these units encourage students to develop their own ideas creatively, using the skills and ideas taught within the lesson and create short performances to showcase their skills.

KEY STAGE 4

Core PE is compulsory for all students. The lessons provided are two, one hundred minute lessons of PE per fortnight. Students select a curriculum pathway to suit their preferred area of specialism. These pathways include:

  • Performance
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Alternative Sports

These concepts taught throughout each pathway remain the same but the activities through which these competencies are taught are selected by the students to suit their theme. Activities include traditional sports such as Rugby, Netball, Football, Hockey, alternative sports such as Kinball, Grass Bowls, Climbing and exercise activities such as Zumba, Yoga and Fitness. Wherever possible, each activity has a direct link to a local community club.

KS4 BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Sport
This vocational course is aimed at young people seeking a career in the Sports industry. This qualification is worth the equivalent of one GCSE. The qualification aims to do the following:

  • Develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of sport
  • Develop candidates’ skills knowledge and understanding that is directly relevant to employment situation
  • Develop ability to work effectively in a sports context
  • Demonstrate skills, knowledge, and understanding of sports principles and the practicalities of delivering sports opportunities to others.

The course is modular and students currently study the following units/modules:

  • Understanding the Body and the Supporting Technology for Sport and Activity
  • Principles of Training, Nutrition and Psychology  (Examination Unit)
  • Applying Principles of Sport and Activity (Linked with the Level 1 Sports Leaders UK qualification)

This course is predominantly coursework based and delivered through a combination of classroom-based lessons and lessons delivered through practical activities.

KS4 BTEC Level 2 Award in Performing Arts (Drama)

This vocational course is aimed at young people seeking a career in the Performance industry. This qualification is worth the equivalent of one GCSE. The qualification aims to do the following:

  • Develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of a range of acting styles
  • Develop candidates’ skills knowledge and understanding that is directly relevant to the employment sector
  • Develop ability to work effectively in a performance context whilst exploring a range of roles and responsibilities within the Performing Arts sector.
  • Demonstrate the ability to direct a performance to execute in front of a live audience

The course is modular and students currently study the following units/modules:

  • Component 1 – Exploring the Performing Arts
  • Component 2 – Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts
  • Component 3 – Responding to a Brief

This course is predominantly coursework based and delivered through a combination of classroom-based lessons and lessons delivered through practical activities in the Drama Studio.

NCFE Level 2 in Health and Fitness

This vocational course is aimed at young people seeking a career in the Sports industry. This qualification is worth the equivalent of one GCSE. The qualification aims to do the following:

  • Focus on an applied study of the health and fitness industry sector
  • Offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a significant core of knowledge and theoretical content with broad-ranging applicability
  • Provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:

  • Prepare, plan and develop a personal health and fitness programme
  • Understand the benefits of fitness
  • Know the functions of the main body systems
  • Understand the benefits of a healthy balanced diet and how it affects lifestyles.

The course is modular and students currently study the following units/modules:

  • Principles of Health and Fitness
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Preparing and Planning Health and Fitness (Externally Marked Unit)
  • Develop a Health and Fitness Programme

This course is predominantly coursework based and delivered through a combination of classroom-based lessons and lessons delivered through practical activities in the Fitness Suite.

 

VI FORM

We provide a comprehensive sports offer for our VI Form students that include VI Form Enrichment, Sports Academies and traditional academic vocational courses. Our Sports Academies are available every Wednesday afternoon (200 minutes per fortnight) and currently include Football, Rugby and Netball Academies.  In addition, the VI Form enrichment programme offers a range of sports activities both before and after School, as well as periods during the School Day.

BTEC LEVEL 3 IN SPORT

This qualification allows students to select the level of qualification required. Equivalent to an AS, A level, 2 A levels and 3 A levels respectively, the delivery and assessment are more vocational in nature; however, there is an exam in each of the courses which is externally marked by BTEC.  This course also involves study of the Level 2 (Community Sports Leader Award) in Year 12 – followed by Level 3 (Higher Sports Leader Award) in Year 13. The award will also include selected additional qualifications in gym instruction, first aid and various National Governing Bodies coaching awards.

BTEC LEVEL 3 PUBLIC SERVICES (Diploma)

This qualification allows students to select the level of qualification required. Equivalent to two A levels respectively, the delivery and assessment are more vocational in nature. This award complements the Duke of Edinburgh Awards that are offered as part of the VI Form Academies.

BTEC LEVEL 3 IN PERFORMING ARTS (Drama)

This qualification is equivalent to an A Level.  The delivery and assessment are more vocational in nature; however, there is are two units that are externally marked by BTEC. This course gives students the opportunity to develop their performance and directing skills in a range of different genres. Students have four units to complete two that are coursework based and develop a range of techniques and two that are set by BTEC.

 

CO-CURRICULAR

Co-curricular activities play an important part in Camborne Science and International Academy life and as a faculty; we run an extensive co-curricular programme. Please see the clubs timetables for up to date term-by-term information. We have Community links with a range of clubs including; Camborne Rugby Club, Camborne Bowls Club, Duchy Cross Fit and Cornwall Taekwondo Club; just to mention a few. In addition, we have developed the CSIA Talented Athlete Pathway, which provides our talented sports students with opportunities to further develop their skills and fitness levels through a comprehensive programme of co-curricular opportunities and training. Students are able to apply for this programme yearly and are offered regular support and guidance to allow them to achieve their full potential within their chosen sports.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Leadership courses and programmes feature strongly in each key stage and are delivered as part of the Core PE programme and as units within our BTEC and VI Form Sports Academy programmes. We have a CSIA Leadership Academy which enables all students to have an opportunity to be develop their leadership skills as well as gaining recognised qualifications. This Academy provides a structured pathway for Leadership and allows the students to gain volunteering hours through the Primary Sports Alliance. Throughout the school, we have successful courses in JSLA, CSLA & HSLA. CSIA PE faculty was recently highlighted as an ‘outstanding centre’ by the visiting moderator for Sports Leadership in South West and awarded the accolade of ‘Sports Leadership Academy’ by Sports Leaders UK. We are also the only ‘Professional Learning Centre’ in the South West to deliver the Level 5 / 6 Certificate for Primary School teachers.  

CAREERS

Our courses will prepare students for university courses in PE, Sport and Dance or within their respective industries. We have had students who have progress onto the following courses BEd Secondary Education with QTS, BA in Sport and Physical Education, BA in Sports Development and Coaching, BA in Dance Studies; just to name a few.
