Every student has multiple opportunities to learn from employers about the skills and qualities needed to be a success in the workplace. Employers and employees share information with our students about their career pathways; employment; and progression within their chosen field. Students have at least one employer and employee encounter per year from Year 7 through to VIth Form. Pre-covid we held multiple careers seminars throughout the year, and as restrictions lift, we will reintroduce these opportunities for our students. With our career seminars, careers fayre and Preparation for Life Days there are at least 10 opportunities for each year group a year to engage with employers and employees.
In addition, students at our Nexus campus regularly meet with employers and research professionals from further education establishments to look at STEM opportunities. Evening lectures are open to the whole school population and are open to students from across the county https://www.csms.co.uk/csms-lecture-series/ – these will be re-instated as restrictions lift, currently online lectures are available.
In 2021 work experience placements were not readily available, so for those students who remained in school, we hosted a Careers Focus Week. During this week students met with a representative from Biffa and designed a speed awareness campaign for their staff; an ‘Armed Forces Day’ where they explored careers in the forces and completed an Elite Skills workshop with the British Army; received CPR and AED training from the Ronnie Richards Memorial Trust; a performing arts day where they created a marketing campaign and programme for the Minack Theatre, reviewed ‘behind the scenes’ for a Broadway production; and created designs for Samsung and the Olympic teams.
Careers Fayre
Our annual Careers Fayre is a highlight in our calendar, we missed out in 2021 due to the national lockdown, but our 2022 fayre was our 6th event. Providers booked are based on requests from our students, so it is shaped to their needs.
