An Academic Sixth Form

The VI Form is often referred to as the “The Jewel in the crown of Camborne Science & International Academy” because it is a vibrant, high quality, academic institution which achieves excellent results for students. In 2017 the VI Form celebrated fantastic results with a 100% pass rate across a range of 27 A-Level subjects.

Furthermore, with the excellent pastoral support available, every single VI Former who applied to attend University got their place and we wish them every success in their future.

Supporting Success

To ensure that students succeed it is imperative that appropriate courses are provided for our students, so we have created a range of different routes which students can opt in to, which cater for students of different abilities. Students need support to succeed, so we have a dedicated team of professionals working to support our students, including:

  • Mrs Sarah Belshaw – Vice Principal with Overview of VI Form
  • Mr John Ross – Director of VI Form
  • Miss Dani Perry – Deputy Director of VI Form
  • Mrs Lynne Green – VI Form Administrator

Developing Independence

The VI Form has a very clear philosophy of engaging students in both their academic studies and wider opportunities in order to help them develop into successful and independent adults.  CSIA Form has a Student Leadership Committee structure to promote innovation through the student body. Just like committees in industry, they are tasked with identifying their own area of focus, investigating and planning opportunities, and delivering an end product.

These committees have real responsibilities including organising socials events, charity events, and reviewing facilities. SLCs have proposed, planned, and delivered a spectacular Pasty and Quiz night for 120 VI Formers, families, friends, and teachers which raised £200 for charity. The Facilities Committee proposed and planned the new VI Form Centre, on the Academy grounds, which has made the VI Form feel even more special. Look out for further details. A fantastic time was had over the Christmas period as a result of the excellent work by the events committee in organising a Christmas Ball and the performance committee putting on a variety show.

On the 1st and 2nd of July parents and students participated in a Welcome Evening at the VI Form in preparation for September 2014. Following a welcome drink the parents and students listened to a presentation by Mr John Ross and Mrs Emma Haase, and then participated in a carousel of activities which sought and gave information on key parts of VI Form life including: enrichment, trips and visits, induction, pastoral care, financial support, progression support, and sporting academies.

From Dartmoor to Singapore

There are a wide range of enrichment activities available for students to participate in including sporting academies, 10 Tors, and Duke of Edinburgh. It is no surprise that Camborne Science and International Academy VI Form also have an active international visits programme. This element of VI Form life is a fantastic opportunity for students to broaden horizons and have life-changing experiences.

Opportunities have included the Japanese Humanities Conference; China Science Fair;  exchange trips to Thailand, Korean, Singapore; Camborne Science and International Academy hosted the International Student Science Fair in July 2013; and over the summer students from the VI Form participated in the Moscow International Science Fair. The question for students attending the VI Form is ‘How far do you want your time at VI Form to take you?’

Progression

We are very proud of our students and work very hard to ensure that students, wanting to progress to university level courses, have every possible chance of doing so. We are very successful in doing this and work to help students get input from universities about courses, input from universities about funding and finance, we offer a huge amount of support and guidance on the UCAS application process, and through the regimented tracking of attainment, and quality teaching and learning provision, we ensure that students have the outcomes they require.

Students have gone on ‘go on to study’ History at the University of East Anglia, Maths at Exeter University, Event Management at Plymouth University, Music at the Welsh College of Music, Mining Engineering at University College Falmouth, Paramedic Science at Plymouth University, English and American Literature at Keele University.

During the first week of July VI Form students participated in Progression Week. This week supports students with applications for University of the world of work; enriches their experience with opt-in sessions like FlowRider, Ready Steady Cook, and Survival Skills; and celebrated the end of the year with a trip to Thorpe Park.

Scholarships

CSIA VI Form is very proud to be able to provide students with opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. Students are encouraged to enrich themselves in anticipation of securing a place at university, an apprenticeship, or employment.

The CSIA VI Form is dedicated to supporting students become independent and arranges a variety of opportunities to support this aim. Over the past year, students have participated in PSHE days focusing on: learning,  health and well-being; International and local trips; Scholarships; Duke of Edinburgh; 10 Tors; theatre visits; higher education and apprenticeship conventions; sporting fixtures; and the Christmas and Summer Balls and a trip to Thorpe Park.

The VI Form Academy recognises the value of independence in raising aspirations and outcomes for students and has a limited number of Scholarships available to support students with ambitious enrichment and academic plans. Students can apply for financial support to allow an exceptional challenge to take place. Scholarships are awarded to help enable students to add to CVs and personal statements that they planned, delivered and reported a significant event that was inspirational to them.

There are limited awards available and the expectation is that applications will need to be to a very high standard. Applications for Scholarships take place in the first term of each academic year. For further information please contact ross@cambornescience.co.uk.
